When @lovelesscoffees opened in April 2022, they were still called Spectrum (a name tainted forever when Time Warner Cable started using that moniker). Their Central Ave roastery / cafe is located in northwest Bushwick, an area previously unserved by high quality specialty coffee. I happened to be the first customer for the @olascoffee opening on Feb 11 2022 in the old Gimme Coffee space on Lorimer. Proud of Jeremiah and what he’s created. He’s been roasting his own coffee for many years now and rolled out a line of delicious fermented green coffee drinks. You can see the evolution of the shop from the last two photos. 1. Foxface sandwiches have great acid - I've never had a bad sandwich there. Great pricing too.

2. Houjicha latte at the Kettl mothership in Greenpoint

3. Black sesame patbingsu - Korean shaved ice with red beans - at Yedang in Bayside. My fave bingsu so far in NYC.

4. My friend made this stellar unadon with freshwater eel from Osakana and Rice Factory rice (milled just before shipping) + a beautiful sour from Grimm

5. Olive oil cake from Abraço

6. Rossa pizza from Jersey City's Bread & Salt Bakery

7. Naturally sepia-toned. Stellar almond croissant and Gedeb batch brew at La Cabra

1. Fort Defiance, Red Hook - I love slightly sweet tart drinks such as the Warwick Bramble, created using blackberries, local black currants & gin over pebble ice.
2. My friend @chikonuts made this wonderful chirashizushi with fish from Osakana (East Village branch) and Rice Factory Niigata rice
3. Ayat, Industry City - tahini ice cream with pistachio and halvah - the slightly salty topping added a dimension
4. Usha Foods, Floral Park, NY - papri chaat - thanks much to @zaynabissa for the rec
5. Forever Jerk, East New York / Starrett City - best name. Jerk chicken. Thanks to @joeancowitz for the rec.
6. Jeun Ju Restaurant, Murray Hill, NY - satisfying, homey renditions of dubu kimchi & gamjatang. Thanks to @johnthepang for reintroducing me to this place.
7. Jell & Chill, East Village - summer peach drink with pop rocks (!) - I need to try the lychee summer special. A customer almost fainted when she saw that it was sold out.
8. Rolo’s - the spicy pineapple margarita is an ongoing cocktail favorite, although The Carrot Cocktail currently holds top honors for me.
9. Yozi Noodle, Sunset Park - good, not amazing, well-priced Chinese food in a modern environment. Yozi opened in February and I’ve been a few times since then. Pretty decent XLB, duck organ soups and so-called sauerkraut soups.
10. Coffee Project NY, Midtown East - a good espresso from their newly opened pop-up

1. Jell & Chill - just sweet enough bing fen. Their jelly is made by hand every day from nicandra seeds.
2. Veal & chicken liver pie stole my heart. Made by El Pinguino Greenpoint for the Archestratus bakesale to raise $ for Brigid Alliance.
3. Kelly Mencin's incredible pavlova riff for Rolo's - sweet corn mousse, seasonal berries & meringue
4. My friend's topnotch paleo-friendly tempura - no seed oils, no grains
5. Omakase representation: creative, modern-style nigiri from the talented Jiro/Domo Sushi at Mott Street Eatery. Very cheap for what it is - recommended.
6. Matcha panna cotta omakase-ender from the aforementioned Domo Sushi.
7. Magenta leaf cassava waffle from the grand opening of Ban Bè in Brookyn.
8. Nearly the entire menu of the Cicatriz popup at Leo Sourdough. Chile rellenos were earthy and delicious.
9. My two favorite items at Librae. The croissant has evolved into one of the best in the city and the marzipan stick is addictive: crunchy outside, chewy inside, the sweetness tempered by the poppy seed coating.
10. An awful photo of the giant Archestratus Famoso meatball sandwich. Love her meatballs. Insane amount of food for the money.

My latest fave spot is the newly opened flagship location of @kettltea, on Greenpoint Ave, adjacent to @diandi.nyc - I was already fond of their gelato - everything we tried today is just going to make it harder to choose on the next visit.

This location combines the functionality of the original Ainslie St upstairs tea hideaway, showcasing their high quality imported Japanese tea and gorgeous in-house ceramics, with that of their Bowery Market window, serving a range of tea drinks plus lattes and gelato in the matcha, houjicha, soba flavor triumvirate.

You’ll find these familiar offerings at the to-go cafe area in the front (which also sports a to-go window on Greenpoint Ave), while a back tasting counter offers two wide-ranging set menus with choices of desserts and drinks.

I love the sparse design, attention to detail, and enthusiasm and energy of the place.

The name Nook (@nook_bklyn) seems a misnomer given

The name Nook (@nook_bklyn) seems a misnomer given the location’s vast exterior expanse of dark glass and brick, but when you walk into the bright, high-ceilinged interior, it all becomes clear. Occupying the corner portion of a newly-constructed building on Irving Ave & Troutman St, this Bushwick cafe is appealingly divided into sections including two partially-separated living room nooks on one wall and even a raised tatami room, complete with shoe cubby and kitted out with low stools. The attractive, curvy, wood furniture is handmade by the owners and most is available for purchase.

On a recent visit, nearly all of the large number of seats was occupied with laptop campers, as if the pandemic had never happened, although social distancing did seem to be the norm. When I happened back that way after a few hours sojourn elsewhere, many of the same people were visible in the window, working away on their laptops. There is also some outdoor seating.

Coffee is provided by Caffe Vita, whose roastery is a hop, skip and a jump away on Johnson Ave. According to my records, I haven’t consumed their dark-roasted brew since 2012 (!), when they opened their first East Coast branch on the Lower East Side. The drip at Nook still has their signature roasty tang but was tolerable enough to consume the entire cup. Service is friendly and they also stock Evil Twin beer and have a large menu of food items.

Coffee klatch Southeast Williamsburg edition.

A good @varietycoffee cortado from @bk_apo (first three images), a new spot that seems likely to have a longer run than its many predecessors, with a smart division of the space into a Manhattan Ave-fronted take-out cafe and a Meserole Ave-side restaurant, with a plethora of attractive outdoor seating.

At @brooklyn_ball_factory (images 4-6), which Foursquare tells me I hadn’t visited since 2018, the roof unfortunately has still not reopened, but the friendly barista pulled us quality albeit long shots of their well-developed Japanese-style coffee roasted in-house under the @95rpmcoffee moniker.

We wrapped things up in satisfying fashion at @winsonbakery, which normally uses Variety but today was pulling shots of @proudmaryusa. Their pleasing takeout boxes have been spruced up with beautiful blue ribbons. It’s not often you get a fresh mooncake at this time of year - theirs is very good.

One of the best ways to enjoy a Sunday-Tuesday evening is @wildbirdsbrooklyn, sitting on the sidewalk on the corner of Classon & Dean, listening to wonderful live music and eating one of @trazenyc’s delicious sourdough grandma pies. My fave is the brown butter pesto. Her squares hew fairly closely their Sicilian origins by dint of their meatlessness and fluffy, spongy crust. This cheery Japanese snack is called Happy Turn (!

This cheery Japanese snack is called Happy Turn (!) but pronounced more like happy ton in Japanese (ハッピーターン) and apparently features a character named Prince Turn (?) from the Happy Kingdom.

It also proclaims, “Happy Powder, so delicious you can’t stop!” While hilarious, this also happens to be true. I love these freaking things.

The bag contains a bunch of individually plastic wrapped rice crackers (senbei) that are fairly light and on the dry side. The first one you consume, you’re like, eh, that’s decent but not great. But the second one initiates the full flavor powder transfer to your tongue, and then you’re hooked on the subtly sweet salty taste. The coating really is a happy delicious powder.

I get them at various Sunrise Marts, but other Japanese groceries might have it. It’s often not in stock so if you see it buy a few.

I like everything about @seycoffee, one of my go to spots for coffee beans. Their East Williamsburg roastery (and sole location) sports a beautiful dystopian chic interior, has friendly, competent staff, and purveys lightly roasted coffee. You get a free drip coffee with a box of beans - today’s was Ethiopia Asefa Dukamo - but I always get an espresso as well.
