This cheery Japanese snack is called Happy Turn (!

This cheery Japanese snack is called Happy Turn (!) but pronounced more like happy ton in Japanese (ハッピーターン) and apparently features a character named Prince Turn (?) from the Happy Kingdom.

It also proclaims, “Happy Powder, so delicious you can’t stop!” While hilarious, this also happens to be true. I love these freaking things.

The bag contains a bunch of individually plastic wrapped rice crackers (senbei) that are fairly light and on the dry side. The first one you consume, you’re like, eh, that’s decent but not great. But the second one initiates the full flavor powder transfer to your tongue, and then you’re hooked on the subtly sweet salty taste. It really is happy delicious powder.

I get them at various Sunrise Marts, but other Japanese groceries might have it. It’s often not in stock so if you see it buy a few.

I like everything about @seycoffee, one of my go to spots for coffee beans. Their East Williamsburg roastery (and sole location) sports a beautiful dystopian chic interior, has friendly, competent staff, and purveys lightly roasted coffee. You get a free drip coffee with a box of beans - today’s was Ethiopia Asefa Dukamo - but I always get an espresso as well. A voluptuous sourdough bombolone from @leosourdough, stuffed to the brim with a fluffy ricotta filling studded with pistachios, the slight heaviness of the fresh cheese tempered by homemade rhubarb jam. Almost entirely unsweet but for the granulated sugar dotting the exterior. What a glorious thing. They’re selling them intermittently via pre-order. It’s hard to tell from their online footprint, but NYC’s best Sichuan restaurant @guanfusichuanny is open for takeout. I ordered two of my faves (dry pot chicken & mung bean noodles) and ate them at home w/ @the_rice_factory_ny rice. The mung bean noodles were very ma and very la. Phew. Flushing restaurant 官府川菜 @guanfusichuanny hasn’t lost a step in the 3 years it’s been open - if anything it’s better than ever. I’m already plotting my next visit - number 18. :) I crave their Suan Cai Yu - hot and sour fish soup w/ pickled mustard greens, with its complex broth, variety of different chili peppers, and house pickled greens. So soothing and delicious.
Their mapo tofu is my fave in the city, and all of their dry hot pots are wonderful as well. This time we ordered pork and shrimp. Other dishes included their noteworthy rendition of ox tongue and tripe and another cold appetizer, their homemade mung bean noodles (a fave among our group), string beans with pork, and their signature razor clams with a refreshing mala tingle.
New York City is lucky to have a Chinese restaurant of this caliber - easily the best Sichuan restaurant and probably the best Chinese restaurant in the city as well. Please go support it in these difficult times. Last night there were only a few tables eating.
